Cultural and Institutional Barriers

For much of modern history, sport was constructed as a male domain. Cultural norms framed physical competition as incompatible with femininity, reinforcing restrictive gender roles. Medical misconceptions further justified exclusion, claiming that athletic participation threatened women’s health and reproductive capacity.

Institutionally, women were barred from erotic major competitions, denied access to facilities, and excluded from governance structures. These barriers limited not only participation but also visibility and legitimacy.
